In 2017, Coleman Tractor Company and Austin Peay worked together to create a partnership where Coleman Tractor would loan out new Kubota equipment to the university for use and demonstration on the farm. With this partnership, APSU’s farm now has five pieces of Kubota equipment: a tractor, hay baler, cutter, tedder, and RTV. Annually, the equipment pieces are swapped out with new units so that the university always has the best performing equipment available.

Since the start of this partnership, Coleman Tractor’s equipment has drastically improved yields and efficiency for APSU’s farm. “This equipment has been a tremendous game changer,” Chad Pugh, farm superintendent, says of the program. “We can get as much hay cut whenever we need, and it dramatically increases the nutrition going into the cattle from getting fresher, better quality hay.”

With the speed and efficiency brought to the farm’s operation by Kubota equipment, Pugh and farm technician, Josh Woodard, say they can finish each of their spring/summer hay cuttings in a week or less. This improvement has allowed for more time allotted to other projects around the farm, like tending to the farm’s general maintenance and livestock health and performing demonstrations for students.

This fall, APSU Agriculture Department Chair, Dr. Donald Sudbrink, says the university will be offering its Ag Power and Machinery class on the farm, where the equipment will be used to teach students how to safely operate and optimize agricultural equipment. “This past year, we were able to have the meat goat lab, beef production management, veterinary technology, and weed science classes meet out here at the Farm as well,” says Dr. Sudbrink. With the use of Coleman Tractor’s Kubota equipment, the APSU Agriculture faculty are able to herd cattle with ease in a Kubota RTV in order to perform demonstrations for these lectures and labs.

At Coleman Tractor Company, we are grateful to have the opportunity to work with Austin Peay to not only improve efficiency for their farm, but also to provide tools for educating future generations of agriculturists. Austin Peay recently extended this exciting partnership with us into 2022, and we are looking forward to a bright future ahead for Austin Peay’s Agriculture program and its students.
